Fire has moved through more of West Kalimantan this year than almost anywhere else in Indonesia. The outcome of even a small fire depends on who is close enough to reach it in the first hours, and what they are carrying when they get there.
"We make sure there's no live fire and no more smoke coming out," says Pak Langgi. "If there are branches or parts of trees that have gone brittle, usually you need to dig to make sure nothing is still alight underneath."
